Preview

India will take on South Africa in the first T20I on Tuesday, December 9, at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. India’s last T20I outing was against Australia last month, where they won the five-match series 2-1, with two games washed out. Hardik Pandya returns to the squad after recovering from the injury he picked up during the Asia Cup. Shubman Gill is also back as vice-captain after missing games due to a spasm he suffered in the first Test against South Africa. This will be India’s first home T20I series since January.

South Africa, on the other hand, have had a tough year in T20Is. They have won only five of their 14 matches in 2024 and haven’t won a single series. They lost the tri-series final to New Zealand earlier this year, followed by series defeats to Australia and Pakistan. Their two-match series against England ended 1-1. In October, a second-string South African side led by Donovan Ferreira also lost a T20I to Namibia by four wickets in a last-ball finish.

Overall, India and South Africa have played 31 T20Is, with India winning 18 and South Africa 12. In four T20I series played in India, both sides have won one each, while two series have ended in a draw.
