‘Love of my life, my hero, my best friend’ – Dean Jones’ daughter Augusta posts emotional tribute for her late father

Former Australian cricketer Dean Jones passed away on Thursday, September 24, aged 59, leaving the cricketing fraternity in utter shock. He was in Mumbai for the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which got underway on Saturday, September 19 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He was one of the commentators for the popular T20 tournament.
On Thursday morning, he had breakfast with fellow commentators, his countryman Brett Lee, and former Indian cricketer Nikhil Chopra. He suffered a heart attack in the hotel lobby where he was staying for his commentary stint. Lee also tried to give him a CPR, but his efforts went in vain.
Dean Jones goes away
“It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing away of Mr. Dean Mervyn Jones AM. He died of a sudden cardiac arrest,” Star India was quoted as saying in a statement.
“We express our deep condolences to his family and stand ready to support them in this difficult time. We are in touch with the Australian High Commission to make the necessary arrangements.
“He was a champion commentator whose presence and presentation of the game always brought joy to millions of fans. He will be sorely missed by everyone at Star and his millions of fans across the globe.”
A number of cricketers, including Virat Kohli sent their condolences. Former Pakistan fast bowler, Shoaib Akhtar, shared a video, showing Jones’ humble character. In the clip, Jones can be seen, carrying litter from the ground. Ravi Shastri, the former Indian cricketer and current head coach of the Men in Blue, also shared his condolences.
In the meantime, Dean Jones’ daughter Augusta posted an emotional message for his late father. She uploaded a picture along with his late father to show their camaraderie.
She captioned the picture and wrote, “Love of my life. My hero. My best friend. Dad. Rest in Peace.”

Jones’ international career spanned 10 years from 1984 to 1994. He was also a part of Australia’s 1987 World Cup-winning team. In 52 Tests and 164 ODIs, Jones scored 3,631 and 6,068 runs respectively with 18 centuries and 60 half-centuries.
