About a month ago, not many knew who Lungi Ngidi was. The young bowler, who has an uncanny resemblance to South African pace bowler Kagiso Rabada, had already made his T20I debut for the Proteas. But his claim to fame came during the recently concluded Test series against India. Even this story has been like a fairy tale for the young talented pace bowler.
Lungi Ngidi was not a part of the South African squad for the 3-match Test series against India initially. He was drafted in to the side after the conclusion of the first Test at Cape Town. Soon, he found himself straight in to the playing eleven of the Centurion Test for the hosts. He made his debut in the Test match. In the first innings, he could get only one wicket – that of Parthiv Patel.
But better things awaited him in the match. The Indian players were prepared for the assault from the likes of Morne Morkel and Kagiso Rabada. But as the jokes go, it was Lungi Ngidi who came out of syllabus for the Indian batsmen. Ngidi bagged a six wicket haul in the second innings. This included the big wicket of the Indian captain Virat Kohli. Ngidi’s 6/39 scripted a big win for the South African team.
With the win, South Africa sealed the series and brought a screeching halt to India’s 9-series winning streak. Soon, Ngidi became an internet sensation with the Indian fans having their bit of joy with his name ‘Lungi’. For the Indians, Lungi is a traditional Indian wear for men. The word was made popular by a song named ‘Lungi Dance’ which became a hit number among the masses a few years ago.
Well, it is apparent that even Lungi Ngidi has finally heard the song. He recently took to Twitter to express that he is loving the song. “Just listened to the #LungiDance song loving it already,” tweeted Lungi Ngidi.
