Taking 10 wickets in an innings is a very rare feat in the game of cricket; so much so that the feat has been achieved by only two players in the history of the game – Anil Kumble and Jim Laker. While Laker’s bowling spell came way back in 1956, the achievement by Kumble remains afresh in the memories of all cricket lovers.
Playing in a state-level game, Madhya Pradesh’s young leg-spinner Palash Kochar has matched the record by taking all 10 wickets in an innings. Palash’s achievement came in the Divisional Mway Memorial Trophy match against Naramadapuram.
Talking exclusively to Pradesh 18, Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association statistics expert Mahavir Arya said, “Palash in his 28.1 overs picked up 10 wickets for just 53 runs. He bowled 10 maidens as well. No one before him has ever picked 10 wickets in an innings (at this level).”
Palash Kochar is certainly a talented young bowler. He received the best bowler award in the U23 category last year by the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association. He has been bowling consistently well in the local matches and is knocking the doors of Ranji side at full throttle. Palash was also the leading wicket-taker in the Inter-divisional local tournament.
Interestingly, Palash’s figures of 10/53 are identical to those of Jim Laker’s figure of 10/53 taken against Australia at Manchester during the fourth Test in 1956.
The only other bowler, after Jim Laker, to take 10 wickets in an innings in international cricket is Anil Kumble, the legendary Indian leg spinner. Kumble picked up 10/74 against Pakistan at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground in Delhi way back in 1999.
