The BCCI announced six teams last week for the three upcoming competitions and did not include Manoj Tiwary in any of the squads. The Bengal cricketer has expressed utter disappointment over his non-selection and now wants clarity from the selectors who have been overlooking his performances for a long time now. He also believed that the age is just a number by recalling MS Dhoni’s response to the same after winning the IPL earlier this year.

Tiwary was not part of India A team for the four-day matches against South Africa A, the three-team Duleep Trophy and the quadrangular series involving Australia A and South Africa A, which will see two Indian teams contesting. He was one of the best batsmen in the 2017-18 domestic season is concerned. Tiwary had amassed 507 runs at an average of 126.70, which is the highest ever in a single domestic season in India.

He also averaged more than 100 in Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Deodhar Trophy, a feat which has achieved by no one in a season.

I was hoping to get picked

Manoj Tiwary, while speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, was clearly disappointed for not being selected and wants the selectors to communicate to him. “I was hoping to be picked in the India A squads. When somebody performs to his highest, then he should be rewarded. And I had an outstanding 50-over tournament last season, creating a record that no one else has had in Indian cricket history,” he said.

He also quoted MS Dhoni‘s example when asked if age was the main reason that he was not picked and blamed the selectors for having no clarity on his future. “Everybody in the world knows, age is just a number. At the age of 32 to get cornered for age – that should not be the reason. Everybody heard MS Dhoni’s response to the average age of the Chennai franchise in the IPL. He looked at a player and assessed whether he was quick in the field, whether he has ball sense and if he has agility. That’s how players should be looked at,” the 32-year-old added.

What is the metric behind selection?

Manoj Tiwary wanted to know from the selectors, the metric they’ve been employing while picking the players. He also pointed out that if IPL was the parameter, then he endured an exceptional 2017 season.

“If IPL is the main cause behind the selection, then I had an outstanding 2017. I won the most number of FBB awards [for the most stylish player] with Gautam Gambhir, and I was one of the top performers in my team. So that’s why I say I don’t know what metric is being used for selection. That’s why I want to hear from the selectors,” Tiwary said.
