Australian cricketer Marcus Stoinis has picked up an ankle injury in the ongoing Sheffield Shield tournament. The 29-year-old sustained a ligament damage to his ankle during a warm-up drill for Western Australia. While he managed to score 85 runs with the bat, he didn’t bowl at all in the second innings.

The all-rounder is yet to make his Test debut for Australia. He was quite effective in the recent T20 international series against India. Stoinis was hopeful of returning to the bowling crease as soon as possible. With his next assignment likely to be at the Big Bash League, Stoinis will be looking forward to getting fit against time.

I’m still confident I’ll be alright to bowl

Stoinis remarked that the injury was quite painful initially. Though the scans revealed a tear, he felt that he was recovering quickly. While he agreed that bowling was going to be tougher, he sounded confident regarding donning the batting job since it was his right foot that got injured.

“It was very painful on Saturday. I had a scan and there is a tear in there, but I’m feeling a lot better. I can only only go on how I’m feeling and it’s improved quickly. I think bowling will be tougher than batting but it’s on my right side so at least it’s not my front foot. I’m still confident I’ll be alright to bowl,” he was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

Earlier after the loss at Adelaide Oval, former spin wizard Shane Warne was of the opinion that Australia missed a bowler in the side. He felt that the inclusion of Marcus Stoinis is a necessity for the next Test match at Perth. The former leg-spinner praised the energy levels of the all-rounder and expected him to start in the playing XI next game. However, that’s unlikely to happen as of now.
