Somerset County Cricket Club has revealed that opening batsman and former England international Marcus Trescothick has extended his contract with the County for another year. 42-year-old Trescothick has been closely associated with Somerset and its success. He will now be representing the county for the 27th season.

During his stint with Somerset, the former English skipper has scored 52 first-class centuries and amassed more than 7000 runs, two records the left-hander still holds. Since making his Somerset debut in 1993, Trescothick has scored more than 26,000 FC runs at an average of 41.42.

The top order batsman was also a mainstay in England‘s batting line-up and an important figure in the slip cordon. Throughout his Test career, he scored 5825 runs in 76 matches at an average of 43.79. Trescothick was equally effective in the shorter format: in his 123 ODIs, he aggregated 4335 runs at an average of 37.37. He also went on to captain his country on a number of occasions.

Shortly after finalizing his contract extension, the cricketer said, “I’m delighted to have signed for at least another year. I still have the drive, passion and energy to want to get better and strive to perform for the team. I’ve always said that I want to continue to play for Somerset for as long as possible and that feeling has not changed.

“We’ve made good progress in the Specsavers County Championship and other competitions this season and I’m excited for what is to come for the Club when you look at the combination of youth and experience within the squad,” he added.

Praises for Trescothick

Somerset Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry said, “When you think of Somerset County Cricket Club you think of Marcus Trescothick. His work ethic is second to none and you simply can’t measure what he brings to the Club behind the scenes and in the dressing room. He is the epitome of what a professional sportsman should be.

“We had a number of discussions throughout the season and he made it very clear that he still has the drive and he wants to continue playing whilst he can still positively impact games,” Hurry went on to add.

Somerset CEO Andrew Cornish was also all praises for the veteran left-hander, “Everyone associated with the Club should be delighted today. Marcus is an outstanding example of what you can achieve with dedication and commitment. On the field he is an exceptional player whilst off the field he is a great ambassador for Somerset County Cricket Club and the game of cricket as a whole.”
