Bangladesh is set to play a tri-series involving Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe which begins on Monday. All the matches in this series will be played in the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. In the opening encounter, the home team will face-off Zimbabwe. The visitors have arrived later than scheduled in Bangladesh. Their practice match had to be cancelled due to this reason.
Chandika Hathurusingha, who was the head coach of the Tigers till last month has now taken up Sri Lanka’s coaching duties. The hosts will go into this series without a head coach. Zimbabwe hope to make the most of familiar conditions in Dhaka. Their head coach Heath Streak too returns with a sense of familiarity, as he was Bangladesh’s bowling coach not too long ago.
Threat from the coach
Chandika has worked with the Bangladesh side for close to three years. He knows the strengths and weaknesses of the Bangladesh players inside out. He will be looking to have various strategies and tricks to falter his former side. He has this knack of getting the former students right. This was on display during Australia‘s tour of Bangladesh. He had earlier worked with the Australian team before his stint with Bangladesh.
Chandika resigned mid-way through their South Africa tour to bail the Sri Lankans out of trouble. The ream from the island nation hasn’t had a great success in the recent times. They are struggling to find a captain. The management is playing around with the captains as if they were to play a game of musical chairs. Chandika has had a successful stint with Bangladesh earlier. However, it would be interesting to see what he brings to the table for this already depleted Sri Lanka side.
Speaking on this issue, Bangladesh’s skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza has agreed that the former coach has a lot of knowledge about them. At the same time, he said that they have also studied their opposition well. When asked if they are planning a surprise for the former coach, he said “Yes, we are thinking about it. We want to be smart with our decisions but not over smart.” He feels that the Bangla Tigers can counter-attack Hathurusingha’s strategies.
