Gujarat Lions might be struggling in the ongoing season of the IPL but McCullum has had a great time with the bat. With 225 runs in 5 games, the former Kiwi skipper is topping the batting charts of his franchise.

McCullum, who gave the IPL the best possible start way back in 2008, when he blasted RCB bowlers around to score 158 off just 72 balls to mark the opening of this glamorous tournament, has went about his business quietly. He has already scored two half centuries this year and looks good for at least a couple more.

The New Zealander was involved in a noble cause as he auctioned the naming rights of his bat to raise money for a trust. A Christchurch businessman, Ray Coupland, paid $12,000 to name McCullum’s bat as Coup Ray. Coupland has named the bat after one of its star horses.

The auction took place at a dinner, which was held to remember Riverton jockey Rebecca Black, and as many as $40,000 were raised for the trust.

Black, 40, died in December following the brutal injuries she suffered in a race day fall at Gore. She is survived by 3 children – 16-year old son Caleb Mahon, 18-year old Sebastian and 9-year old Lily. Mahon represented the family at the dinner.

“It means a lot, we appreciate it really. It’s good to see so many people here. I’m not worried about the money, it’s just the thought that counts.” the 16-year old said.

The funds collected will be used to support Black’s three children.

McCullum will use this bat in the IPL and will hand it over to Coupland, at the end of the tournament.

35-year old McCullum retired from international cricket in early 2016 but still plays in T20 leagues around the world. He names his bat after champion horses and his bat which will now be called Coup Ray, is after one of his gallopers who won 11 races and $3,00,000 on the track.
