"Whilst he is a very talented batsman, he's not really fired in Test cricket when he's had a chance," he quoted.

Former Australian bowling coach, Craig McDermott does not believe that all-rounder Glenn Maxwell could fit in to the Australian lineup for the Ashes. The Australian team management has been trying to look for a player who would bat at number 6 in the lineup and also contribute with the ball. The number six quandary has been quite a topic of discussion for the Aussies.

Glenn Maxwell recently stated that he feels fitter than ever before and believes he is ready for the big challenge of the Test cricket, and the Ashes in particular. However, as per the recent quotes in MyKhel.com, Craig McDermott remarked that Test is not really the kind of game suited for Glenn Maxwell. He also reasoned out saying that the team will not want a spinner all-rounder since they have Nathan Lyon in the lineup already. With Mitchell Marsh injured, the former coach put his bid on Marcus Stoinis.

“Number six is going to be a difficult one. I’m not sure whether Maxwell is the man for the job. Whilst he is a very talented batsman, he’s not really fired in Test cricket when he’s had a chance and sometimes you just don’t know what you’re going to get with him. I don’t know if Test cricket is his game really,” McDermott quoted.

“I think they are going to go with the three pacemen and a spinner, so there is what you’ve got and if you’ve got a batsman who can bowl a bit, that helps out. That was probably a Mitchell Marsh, but whether they head down that track, I’m not sure. We are not really looking for a number six who can bowl spin, we are probably looking for a Marcus Stoinis, who can bowl some medium pace, or sharpish deliveries, soak up some overs and hopefully take wickets as well,” he added.

Fan of Mitch Marsh

Speaking further on the same note, he conceded that someone like Mitch Marsh would have been the ideal player in the team. Considering the bouncy tracks in Australia, a bowler like Marsh would have been handy. Also, his batting abilities are very well known to all.

“I’m a pretty big fan of Mitchell Marsh, he is the ideal guy you would want at number six. He’s an excellent batsman and can bowl with good pace and get bounce. That is obviously handy at the Gabba. I definitely wouldn’t pick another guy to bowl spin, as we have Nathan Lyon to do that and if you need somebody to mix it up and give him a rest, the captain can bowl,” he conceded.
