Mumbai Indians, with four IPL titles under their belt, didn’t have a start which they had hoped for. The defending champions were expected to start their IPL 2020 journey on a positive note by thumping Chennai Super Kings in the season opener. However, to their disappointment, they were handed a five-wicket defeat by the MS Dhoni-led side. Defending a total of 162 proved to be an unfeasible task for Rohit Sharma and his men at Abu Dhabi.

Mumbai, however, has a trend of retaliating and qualifying for playoffs in the latter stage of the tournament. With many prolific players in their squad, MI are expected to bounce back in their upcoming games and they did so against the Kolkata Knight Riders winning the game by 49 runs.

MI will now face the Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore on 28th September. MI suffered a batting collapse against CSK but the Rohit Sharma-Quinton de Kock pair certainly looked impressive. The duo smoked runs in the Powerplay with ease and head coach Mahela Jayawardene will be banking on them to continue delivering throughout the league. If they want to shuffle the top-order force, MI also have Australia’s explosive opener, Chris Lynn.

MI has strong pace attack for IPL 2020

The biggest setback for them has been Lasith Malinga’s withdrawal from the tournament. However, with Jasprit Bumrah, Mitchell McClenaghan and Trent Boult in their ranks, MI won’t be missing Malinga much. Along with the Bumrah-Boult duo, they also have Nathan Coulter-Nile, whom they roped in for a massive INR 8 crores in IPL 2020 auction.

MI are equipped with some of the best white-ball players in their squad. Their all-rounder contingent comprises the likes of Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard and Krunal Pandya. Despite being ineffective in their opening fixture, they hold the ability to single-handedly turn the tide in MI’s favour. Mumbai can shuffle their batting order according to each match situation. The likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Anmolpreet Singh and Rahul Chahar will also aim to leave their mark this season.

Lastly, MI will be expecting a lot from their two stalwarts– Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah. The pair’s association with the franchise has played a vital role in shaping their careers. In MI’s pursuit of their fifth IPL silverware, both Rohit and Bumrah will be expected to hit a purple patch in IPL 2020.
