Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma could not have had a better start to the 30th year with a thrilling super over away win over the Gujarat Lions on Saturday at Rajkot. Mumbai, after starting the game so well went downhill with the successive fall of wickets.

If the Mumbai Indians batsmen had applied a little more skill and mindset, they would have helped the team cross the line with wickets left. That was not the case at Rajkot as the team astonishingly went down from being in the pole position to win the game to ending the match with the score on the level with the home side Lions.

In the Super over, Mumbai Indians skipper picked Kieron Pollard, Jos Buttler and himself to bat in the super over. Mumbai Indians posted 11 runs in the super over, with James Faulkner picking the wickets off successive deliveries. In reply, the Gujarat Lions could only muster six runs, thanks to the fantastic bowling from the Indian Jasprit Bumrah.

“Very good birthday present, great game of cricket. Never been part of Super Over, that’s something we have learnt as well,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

The MI team immediately after the win celebrated the skipper’s birthday in the dressing room.

Further, the Mumbai Indians’ skipper praised the Baroda all-rounder Krunal Pandya for his all-round performance which allowed the Indians’ to take the game to the Super over.

“We got off to a good start, were sitting pretty until the 10th over, knew the wicket was getting slower and the target was going to be tough. We knew they would bowl well, losing wickets wasn’t great, but Krunal did very well to stay till the end,” he said.

With this win, the Mumbai Indians have almost cemented their place at the second position in the Indian Premier League standings. The Indians’ are almost through to the play-off stages of the tournament. Meanwhile, the Gujarat Lions have to win all their remaining games to stand a chance to reach the play-off stages of the tournament for the second running year.

Happy Birthday, Rohit Sharma!
