The Indian team has completely dominated the ongoing ODI series against South Africa and are enjoying the 3-0 lead after three matches. The wrist spinners of India have wreaked havoc as the batsmen have completely failed them to pick the result of which the home side is yet to cross 200 in their last couple of matches. The third ODI was the replica of the second game as South Africa were lost for ideas. This is when Michael Holding and Shaun Pollock tried their hands at speaking Hindi during the commentary.
India had posted a mammoth total of 303 runs for the loss of six wickets on the back of a stupendous unbeaten ton from their skipper Virat Kohli. In reply, South Africa started brightly despite losing their opener Hashim Amla in the second over. The duo of Aiden Markram and JP Duminy looked in complete control of the chase before the spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav came to the fore. The batsmen got bogged down and eventually lost the wickets.
Holding tests Pollock’s Hindi
The game was not moving fast as David Miller and Khaya Zondo were just blocking the spinners and were visibly struggling. The incident happened in the 25th over when the commentators on air Michael Holding and Shaun Pollock tried to take a dig at each other. Holding first said, “So Polly after (spending) all these years in India you still can’t understand Hindi.” Pollock tried to show off his skills in reply by saying, “Shabaash (Well done), Jaldi Chalo (Come fast), that’s all I know.”
The conversation didn’t stop though as Holding continued saying that he knows all these words quizzing the former South African pace bowler about ‘Thanda Pani’ (cold water). Pollock, however, accepted his defeat in response as he didn’t know the meaning and brought his fellow commentator’s focus back to cricket. Both enjoyed the little time speaking Hindi as the Indians continued to squeeze the hosts with their wrist spinners.
Micheal Holding to Shaun Pollock : Even I know Hindi. Gurram Paani ( Garam Paani ) and all. Do you know what Thanda Paani means ?
Pollock (Laughs) : No
Holding : It means Cold Water
