Former Australian cricketer Michael Hussey believes that the Australian team needs to make bold moves in India. Australia are scheduled to play 4 Tests in India starting in February. Hussey believes that if Australia wishes to better their subcontinental record, they should not shy away from playing 3 spinners in the lineup.

Australia have the reputation of playing a predominant pace bowling line up. However, Mr. Cricket wants the ideology to change if the Aussies wish to see changing fortunes. As per the quotes in the media, Michael Hussey remarked that the pitches in India are bound to turn.

The Aussies have a very poor record in the subcontinent in the recent past. Last year, they were whitewashed 0-3 by Sri Lanka. The last time they toured India, they were whitewashed by MS Dhoni-led team India. Hussey reflected at the squad chosen for the tour and cited that the team boasts of a leg spinner, a left armer and an off spinner. Hence, they are well equipped for the tour.

“I think we’ve got to adapt to the conditions and I think the squad is nicely balanced for that. We’ve got the option of playing three spinners if we want to. And we’ve got left-arm orthodox (O’Keefe and Agar), we’ve got right arm orthodox (Lyon) and we’ve got wrist spin (Swepson), so we’ve got all the bases covered,” said Michael Hussey.

He added that the Indian team will fancy turning tracks and hence it comes as no surprise that there will be turners on the tour. In order to beat the hosts on such turners, it is of utmost importance to choose the best possible combination. He mentioned that Steve O’Keefe and Nathon Lyon will surely make it to the playing eleven. But if need be, Australia can consider Ashton Agar or Mitchell Swepson.

“I’m sure India will try and get the pitches to turn. That’s where they’re at their best and that’s where we’ve struggled in the past. There’s no question there’s going to be turning tracks so we have to be ready for that both from a batting point of view and team selection,” Hussey quoted.

“We need to pick the best team that’ll give you the best chance of winning in the conditions. It’s something they’ll definitely consider and it offers a lot of balance to the team as well. O’Keefe and Lyon will be the first two spinners, but it gives you the option of playing Agar or Swepson and seeing what the best chance of taking 20 wickets is,” he conceded further.
