The Australian team is under the rebuilding phase where they are trying to figure out the best set of players that can represent the team for the next few years. While that is being dealt with, Australia will be in a unique situation in early 2017. They have two parallel series’ scheduled; they will be hosting Sri Lanka for a three Twenty20 International series at home while the Test team will also fly to India for the four-Test series.

This situation has now forced Cricket Australia to also look for another coach for the T20 team. While Head Coach Darren Lehmann and Assistant Coach David Saker will be on their way to India it is believed that CA might appoint Mike Hussey as the caretaker head coach of the team. There are other prominent names in discussion in the likes of Ricky Ponting, Shane Warne as well as Shane Watson and Brad Haddin.

CA is believed to have been keen on roping in Ponting, its most successful skipper ever but his professional commitments don’t allow him time to take up the role and thus it is quite likely that Hussey who was also with the team as batting consultant during the World T20 in India will be handed over the short-term responsibility.

The 41-year-old sounded excited at the opportunity and is more than willing to take up the role. “I’m already interested in (coaching), definitely. But I’m not sure I’m keen to be in it in a full-time capacity because if you’re with an international team, you’re pretty much on the road for 10 months a year and that’s certainly one of the reasons why I retired (in January 2013).”

“It’s certainly not something that I’m in the short term looking to get back into on a full-time basis. But perhaps down in the future and certainly coming in as a consultant type and helping out for a few weeks here or there, is something that’s really interesting.” Mike Hussey said.
