Waqar Younis resigned as Pakistan’s bowling coach last month alongside the head coach Misbah-ul-Haq. The decision from the duo came soon after Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad announcement. While the timing of their resignation hinted at a controversy, Misbah and Waqar were in the news for another controversy during their term at the helm.

The left-arm seamer Mohammad Amir retired from international cricket in December 2020 shockingly. He claimed the mental torture from the then coaching staff, comprising Misbah and Waqar, as one of the reasons for his decision to retire early from the international arena.

When Waqar Younis was asked about same, he stated that the question should be asked to Amir and not him. Waqar also demanded an explanation from Amir asking him what is exactly mental torture. “You are asking the question from the wrong person. Did he answer that what is mental torture? I don’t know anything about mental torture, may be he should elaborate what is mental torture,” he said while speaking to ARY News.

Did Waqar Younis have any issues with Akhtar?

Meanwhile, Waqar Younis has also cleared the air around him having issues with Shoaib Akhtar. The Rawalpindi Express was benched for the semi-final against India during the World Cup 2011 when Waqar was the head coach of the Pakistan side. He stated that Wahab Riaz was bowling well at that time and for the same reason, the left-arm pacer was preferred then. Interestingly, Wahab picked up a five-wicket haul as well in that game helping Pakistan make a comeback.

“There is a squad of 15-16 players and everyone is important for the team. His performance in the World Cup and other matches was going down. We played Wahab in replacement and then he took five wickets as well. I thought he did extremely well. The players sitting on the bench are also a part of your team, so when Wahab played, he took five wickets and put Pakistan in a good position,” Waqar added.
