Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) created history by registering their first win in Jaipur against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Monday, March 25 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. The Ravi Ashwin-captained team won the match by 14 runs after a controversial moment in the match involving KXIP’s skipper and Jos Buttler changed the course of the match.

Jos Buttler was going on his merry way in the Royals’ chase of 185 runs when in the 13th over of the innings, Ashwin mankaded Buttler to send him back for 69 runs. The appeal was upheld and the third umpire gave Buttler his marching orders as he was found short of the crease.

Social media was immediately flooded with reactions from the cricketing fraternity with Buttler’s England teammates Eoin Morgan and Jason Roy slamming Ashwin for his unsportsmanlike conduct. Dale Steyn and Shane Warne too criticized Ashwin for what they perceived as unprofessional conduct.

Mohammad Kaif opines on the whole matter

Former India international Mohammad Kaif gave his opinions on Ashwin’s incident. Ashwin is known to do anything within rules to win the game and Kaif recalled that Ashwin did something similar even in international cricket. The incident happened in an ODI game in Australia in 2012, when Ashwin tried to mankad the Sri Lankan Lahiru Thirimanne and appealed. However, the captain of the Indian team in that match, Virender Sehwag took the appeal back and everything went smoothly.

Mohammad Kaif took to Twitter and wrote: “It’s within the laws of the game but Jos Butler should have been warned by Ashwin before that. Very Surprised! Remember Ashwin doing the same in an international game where Sehwag withdrew the appeal.”

After Buttler’s dismissal, RR collapsed from 108 for 1 to 164 for 9 in 20 overs to lose the match by 14 runs. Jos Buttler and Rahane had added 78 runs for the opening wicket to take RR off to a flying start, while Sanju Samson added quick 30 runs with Buttler. Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Ankit Rajpoot, and Sam Curran took two wickets each to lead the visiting team to the win.
