The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday stated that Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi was reprimanded by the ICC match referee for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the 4th ODI of the 5-match series against Ireland at Belfast on Sunday.

Nabi was found to be in violation of Level 1 Article 2.1.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel which relates to “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game.”

The incident happened during the sixth over of Ireland’s run-chase when Nabi claimed that he had kept the ball in play by stopping Ed Joyce’s cover drive inside the boundary. However, photographic evidence later confirmed that Nabi was in contact with the ball whilst outside the boundary when he had flicked the ball for Rashid Khan to help run-out Joyce.

Nabi admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by ICC Match Referee David Jukes. As such, there was no need for a formal hearing. The charge had been laid by the on-field umpires Alan Neill and C.Shamshuddin, as well as third umpire Royl Black.

The run out created a lot of buzz and was a poor display of sportsman spirit by the visiting team. Afghanistan team was able to bowl out Ireland for 150 runs in reply to their 229 and won the game by 79 runs to take a 2-1 lead in the series with a game to go. The last match of the series will be played tomorrow and will be Afghanistan’s chance to win the series while the home team will be eager to level the series 2-2.
