Fast-bowlers in India are an unlucky fraternity. They are forced to bend their backs on unhelpful conditions, sweat it out and break their backs. Mohammed Shami, who looked to be the guy who would lead India’s pace attack after Zaheer Khan, is round the corner for another comeback. Shami was jolted by a knee injury last November, during the third Test versus England. The pacer’s career has been marred with many injuries thus far, having made his debut in Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell series, back in 2013.

Shami, who was a star performer for India in the 2015 edition of ODI World Cup, was forced to sit out of the team for almost 10 months, due to an injury he sustained in the World Cup. When he did make a comeback and made it to Australia for Test series, his hamstring was injured during a practice session in Perth. He was flown back and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar was sent as a replacement.

Shami posted a video of him bowling at the NCA on Twitter, seemingly with a steady run-up. He looks up to the mark for a return to the cricketing field, who has been hard done by the demise of his father. Shami had described ‘hard work’ as the key to success and seems to be on the right track for a comeback by sweating it out on the training grounds of NCA in Bengaluru.

However, it needs to be seen, when exactly can Shami wear the Indian colours again as the Indian coach Anil Kumble has made it clear that, players returning from injury are required to prove their match fitness by playing first-class matches before being considered for selection.

Shami was not selected for the East Zone team in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy or Bengal team for Vijay Hazare Trophy. It would be interesting to see if he’s rushed back to the team for the ongoing Test matches against Australia, a series of four Test matches, spanning till March.
