One week can change so much, and the latest person to find that out the hard way is Indian bowler Mohammed Shami. Till Tuesday he was a celebrated cricketer, one of India’s best pace bowlers. But by the end of the week, he has his BCCI contract withheld, his 2018 IPL campaign with Delhi Daredevils in a cloud of uncertainty and his personal life all in shambles.
It all started when his wife Hasin Jahan took to Facebook as a last resort according to her, and posted screenshots of Shami’s personal chats with a number of women which all hint to illegitimate romantic relationships. Over the next 48 hours, a whole lot of other accusations was brought up by her which included physical and emotional abuse, continuous and numerous extra-marital affairs, involvement with sex racketeering and match-fixing circles and even attempt to murder.
Accusations against Shami’s brother
To back her claims, she lodged an official FIR with Kolkata Police on Thursday and among her complaints, one was a charge of rape against Shami’s elder brother. From what she told the media, the incident took place last year at the family residence in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh in December. Hasin claims that Shami forced her into a room with his elder brother who took the opportunity to touch her inappropriately.
“Shami told me this outside the room and Hasib (Shami’s brother) was inside the room. He said since I was a model, these things should not bother me much and he pushed me inside and locked the room,” Jahan stated on Friday. “Hasib tried to misbehave with me. I screamed and then Shami opened the door,” she added.
Hasin is a former model and was also a cheerleader for Kolkata Knight Riders.
Even though Shami has constantly denied every single allegation made against him, the situation does not look good for him. Given the dead serious extent of claims by his wife, Kolkata Police crime investigation department has begun non-bailable cases against him. “Kolkata police’s detective department has already started an investigation. We will look into all the allegations and carry out a thorough probe,” Joint Commissioner of Crime Praveen Tripathi told TOI.
Shami has been notified under Section 41A of Criminal Code asking to present himself before investigators, refusal of which can mean arrest and time in police custody.
