KL Rahul had a forgettable start to his new captaincy stint individually as well as collectively, after a five-wicket loss to the fellow debutants Gujarat Titans in their IPL 2022 opener at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on March 28. After being put in to bat first by GT skipper Hardik Pandya, LSG were tottering at 29/4 as pacer Mohammed Shami destroyed their top-order and also sent Rahul back to the dugout for a golden duck.

Even then, they managed to post 158 runs on the board. But LSG failed to defend 158 in the second innings as power-hitter Rahul Tewatia’s explosive knock helped the Titans in getting past the finish line. Nonetheless, this was not less than a win for KL Rahul, as he lauded the team for showing great fight. But, it did not go down well with some of the fans.

KL Rahul trolled by fans for his latest Twitter post

Taking to the micro-blogging site, the Lucknow skipper posted a couple of images of the team’s celebrations in the second innings and he captioned it as, “This one felt like a win because of the way we fought. Proud.” As soon as it came to the notice of the fans, some of them had no hesitation in being critical.

Here are some of the reactions:

What happened in the match?

After being reduced to 29/4, debutant Ayush Badoni’s impressive knock of 54 runs from 41 deliveries helped LSG post a respectable total on the board. He was involved in an 87-run stand with Deepak Hooda who scored 55 runs off 41 balls. Apart from Hooda, the youngster was also involved in a 40-run stand with Krunal Pandya (21*).

In reply, Sri Lankan pacer Dushmantha Chameera’s twin strikes left GT reeling at 15/2 before captain Hardik Pandya and Matthew Wade anchored the chase. Wade scored a 29-ball 30, while Hardik contributed with 33 runs from 28 deliveries before being dismissed. South African middle-order superstar David Miller also chipped in with a valuable 21-ball 30.

Explosive batter Rahul Tewatia added finishing touches with a fine knock of an unbeaten 40 from 24 balls as he successfully took the Gujarat Titans over the line with two balls to spare.
