South Africa spearhead Morne Morkel believes that his career is slowly nearing its deadline and he is now relishing the moments while playing cricket. Morkel, whose career has fallen victim to injuries very frequently, does not have much hope of representing South Africa in the 2019 ICC world cup.

However, the tall fast bowler kept himself away from mentioning exactly how long he will play. But he believes that his career as a South Africa cricketer is inching closer to its end.

What Morkel had to say:

“I love playing for this team. But it’s not rocket science that they probably want to start looking, in white-ball cricket, at the 2019 World Cup.

“Am I going to part of those plans? If I can be around to help the younger guys find their feet, so be it. I’ll do that. For me, the main focus is this tour and then we’ll go back and see how we go,” he added.

The player who features for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League has not been an integral part of South Africa’s limited overs team in the past 11 months. However, the big guy donned the Protea jersey in all the three ICC champions Trophy matches the country played. Morkel is also aware of the fact that the selectors have moved over him and are now looking for fresh alternatives.

“My conditioning’s been good over the years and I really look after my body. Mentally and physically I feel strong. But the World Cup is two or three years down the line and those are decisions they need to make,” he said.

Kagiso Rabada and Andile Phehlukwayo have been exceptional in recent times and have made things difficult for Morkel. And with Lungi Ngidi also in contention, the Protea bowling attack looks sorted for the future.

The likes of Wayne Parnell and Chris Morris are other effective bowlers available for South Africa and their ability to bat as well leaves Morkel in no man’s land.

After South Africa’s most lethal weapon, Dale Steyn was forced to the sidelines due to injuries, Morne Morkel stepped up and took the responsibility to lead the Protea pace attack. But the bowler now feels that his time is slowly crawling towards its end and he prefers to enjoy each and every moment on the field.

“For me, every time I get the ball, it’s about really enjoying the moment. In the past, I put myself under a lot of pressure, but I think those sort of days are gone.

“I know how quickly a career can change. And I’m not starting my career. My career’s nearly finished. So I am just enjoying the moment.” concluded the bowler.
