‘Most overrrated and underperforming player’ – Twitterati react as Sanju Samson dismissed cheaply against Punjab Kings

Sanju Samson hasn’t kick-started the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021’s UAE leg on a fine note, scoring just five in his first assignment against Punjab Kings. Coming to bat at number three, the Rajasthan Royals skipper would have backed himself to play an innings of substance. After, openers Evin Lewis and Yashasvi Jaiswal gave RR a flying start. Also, the track at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium looked fine for batting.

However, Samson failed to make a mark. He fell prey to debutant pacer Ishan Porel in the first ball of the seventh over. It wasn’t really a wicket-taking delivery as Porel banged the ball short and wide. On most of the occasions, Samson would have sent such balls over the ropes. This time, however, he edged the ball and wicketkeeper KL Rahul took a mighty fine catch.

The PBKS skipper dived towards his right and grabbed the ball with just one hand. His efforts brought curtains to Samson’s brief stay at the crease. While the RR camp looked disappointed, Punjab Kings players were ecstatic. After all, Samson scored a stunning century in his last outing against the Kings. Unfortunately for the Men in Pink, he failed to replicate his heroics.

Meanwhile, the ongoing UAE leg is indeed crucial for the Kerala-born cricketer. He has been around the national team for a while but couldn’t cement his place in the side. Samson was even picked for India’s white-ball tour of Sri Lanka in July this year. He failed to make a significant mark and subsequently, the national selectors didn’t consider him for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021.

With Samson slowly going out of the radar, the 26-year-old has a point to prove in the UAE leg. However, his first assignment wasn’t memorable by any means. Fans were also not amused with Samson’s failure and they expressed the same on social media.

Speaking of the game, PBKS elected to bowl first after winning the toss. While openers Evin Lewis and Yashasvi Jaiswal added 54 runs in just 5.3 overs, Samson couldn’t do much. Nevertheless,  RR have many dashers in their line-up who can torment the best of bowlers.
