With most of the cricketers, we find their fathers have been their heroes behind the scenes in the making of an Indian cricketer especially during his early days. Two of the most important members of the Indian Test squad Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara are both inspired by their fathers Prem Kohli and Arvind Pujara.

While Kohli lost his father during his Ranji days, Arvind Pujara has been a mentor of Cheteshwar Pujara in every aspect of the game and what we now know is Arvind sets his son’s focus by advising him how to start the innings.

Despite these facts, we are bound to get exceptions and Indian spin ace Ravichandran Ashwin is one among them. Currently the No.1 all-rounder in Tests, Ashwin was inspired by his mother and it was she who advised him to become a spinner from a fast bowler.

Ashwin’s father Ravichandran said, “I only took my son to the training and different other places for participating in the matches. But it was his mother Chitra who actually did the coaching right from his childhood!”

He added, “I had to note down our son’s performance in each and every match from his childhood. Even, I used to note Ashwin’s batting and bowling performance at the nets also. I had written the comments of his coach after everyday training. The reason was that his mother used to watch my notes and then start advising her son.”

Initially, Ashwin used to be a medium pacer with a long run up. It was after his mother advised him to shorten his run up and become a spinner citing fast bowling as a total waste of energy.

“One day his mother told him that his long run-up did not look good at all. And it was waste of energy. Chitra asked her son to begin spin bowling instead of pace. And from that day Aswin began to concentrate on spin bowling,” Ashwin’s father revealed.

Ashwin’s father also stated that his mother used to make notes on his performance in a book when he had already settled in club and state level cricket and it was his mother who had urged him to never ignore his batting qualities. Ashwin is surely benefitting from his mother’s words now.
