Indian skipper MS Dhoni has once again proved why he is widely respected in the cricketing world. At the post-match presentation ceremony, Dhoni expressed his sympathies for Bangladesh team and offered a few consolatory words to Mahmudullah who almost took his team over the line in a thrilling encounter in Bangalore.
The Tigers needed 11 off the last over and later just 2 off 3 however Hardik Pandya’s first two deliveries produced 2 massive wickets before a last ball run out. Bangladeshi batsmen Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah were guilty of going for the glory shots when singles would have got the job done.
Dhoni expressed his feelings: “Often it does, at times you look to finish it with the big shot. And if you think you have wickets in hand, you think others can finish it. And when you are batting well, you go for your shots. It’s a learning curve for Mahmudullah as it happens with all finishers. That’s what cricket is all about, if that had gone for a six, it was a great shot. Great courage. That’s what cricket is.” Mahmudullah later shared this on his Facebook page where comments of appreciation and encouragement flooded in by the fans.
In an engrossing finish to the match, Rahim had spanked 2 fours off successive deliveries, however, tried to pull the 4th ball and gave Dhawan an easy catch at mid-wicket. Mahmudullah hit a full toss to Jadeja who took a fine running catch. Shuvagata Hom then tried to steal a single however Dhoni did well to keep the ball in his hand and ran to uproot the stumps that found Rahman short of his crease.
India had to win this match to stay alive in the competition while Bangladesh is now out of contention for the semis. The Men in Blue will only need a win against the Aussies on Sunday and won’t have to worry about the net-run rate.
