Indian wicket-keeper MS Dhoni was out of action during India’s batting in the third and final T20I against New Zealand in Thiruvananthapuram. The game ended in a close contest after rain forced a delay in the start and both the teams had to settle for an eight-over game. Dhoni didn’t make a huge impact until the final hour when he ran-out Tom Bruce with the visitors needing 20 runs from 7 balls.

India batting first, scored 67/5 in their 8 overs while in reply the Kiwis could manage just 61/6, falling apart and losing the match by 6 runs. Dhoni, who hardly misses an opportunity to dismiss a batter, looked sharp in the field and he has once again put all the talks to rest.

Dhoni makes the difference

The Kiwi batters kept their pace and ran short cheeky singles and converted a few of those into doubles but luck ran out at the end. Bruce ran a single as Dhoni threw the ball back to Jasprit Bumrah, who missed a direct hit but all-rounder Hardik Pandya, standing at mid-on, did well to throw the ball to Dhoni and the keeper did the rest.

The New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson was gutted after the defeat, as they came very close to lofting the trophy. “It was quite hard to know what a good score was on that surface. A tough match. A tricky surface. Runs on the board was handy. India outplayed us, although it came down to the last 2-3 deliveries. We showed good fight throughout, played smart cricket, but you need to be at your best to win here. That’s why this team is possibly the best in the world. A number of strides forward for us as a group.” he said.

Dhoni looked as fit as any competitive cricketer in the field and therefore it is certain that time and again, the ‘man with a midas’ touch will make cricket experts eat their words.
