MS Dhoni pads and gloves auctioned for big bucks

Indian limited overs skipper MS Dhoni had his pair of wicketkeeping gloves and his pads sold at an auction organized by xtratime.com. While the Indian skipper’s pads fetched Rs. 1 Lakh, his gloves fared a lot better as it fetched Rs. 1.5 Lakh. One-time India batsman Manoj Tiwary was also a part of the auction as he picked up some of Leander Paes’ old tennis racquets.

The Bengal skipper also added that the tennis player going for his seventh successive Olympics as an “inspiration for all sportspersons.” The purpose of the auction was to raise money for the treatment of Mohun Bagan fan Bapi Majhi, who is suffering from liver cancer and the family of deceased East Bengal supporter Alip Chakraborty.

Reports suggested that almost Rs. 14 Lakh was collected at the auction, all of which will be handed over to Majhi and Chakraborty’s families. After buying the racquets, Manoj Tiwary stated that Paes’ dedication towards the game was an inspiration to all sportspersons. He said: “At the age of 42, Leander is still winning Grand Slams. His dedication and hard work are an inspiration for all sportspersons. I love playing tennis during breaks and it would be nice to play with these racquets.”

Tiwary also stated that he would try and meet Paes before the latter boards the flight to Rio for the Olympic games. A city-based film producer Namit Bajoria bought Pele’s autographed football for Rs 1.10 lakh. The other auctioned items like Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri’s jersey, cricketer Ajinkya Rahane’s jersey were also bought at the auction.
