MSK Prasad, the chairman of selection committee of BCCI, has said that the Indian team is spoilt for choices when it comes to picking the 15-man squad for the ICC World Cup 2019. The mega event will be played in England and Wales and will start from May 30.

Team India has lost only one ODI series since last year against England. They have defeated the likes of South Africa, Australia and New Zealand in their own den. They have tried out various players for different positions during this time and has many options to choose from to pick their final squad.

Selection is a healthy headache

Speaking to India Today, MSK Prasad said that the selectors have a healthy headache when it comes to picking the squad for the upcoming World Cup, mentioning that there are still 2-3 spots up for grabs in the Indian squad. He also insisted that these two-three spots are crucial for the balance of the team.

“Well, I can clearly say we are having a healthy headache, spoiled for choice. We need to strike the balance. This is a mega event, and we want to win the World Cup. So that is where those two-three slots are going to be very crucial,” Prasad said.

Candidates vying for open spots in the squad

Team management has been impressed with KL Rahul, who scored 50 and 47 in the two T20Is against Australia recently. Rahul, who was suspended after his appearance on Koffee with Karan caused controversy, has come back strong to stake claim for the reserve opener spot in the squad.

Also, there is a tussle between Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik for the second wicket-keeper spot. But with Karthik not picked for the Australia ODIs, it remains to be seen whether Pant gets enough chances to prove himself. Another player who has staked a big claim for a World Cup berth is all-rounder Vijay Shankar, who emerged as the player to look out for in the New Zealand series, thanks to injury to Hardik Pandya. Now, he has the chance to impress the selectors with his skills and book a place for World Cup.

Looking for balance in the World Cup squad

MSK Prasad further said, “It’s going to be a long, long tournament. We need to pick the right XI, strike the right balance. What is more important is our players have to be fit for the next 45 days and after the IPL. These are the things that we need to keep in mind.”

He also called for rotation of players in the upcoming matches and not playing the same XI in the remaining ODI matches against Australia. He mentioned that the reserve players are going to be important in this edition of the World Cup.
