The inaugural edition of the Mumbai T20 League is all set to commence on March 11 as six franchise based teams will fight it out for the ultimate glory. The tournament is clashing with international and domestic matches this year and will miss its major cricketing icons from Mumbai itself. Though Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is making up for it by appointing the former cricketers at the helm. Dilip Vengsarkar has been selected as the chief mentor for the whole tournament which will last until March 21.
All the six teams already have high-profile mentors and it will be actually interesting to see the role which Vengsarkar will play during the course of the tournament. Sachin Tendulkar is the brand ambassador and Sunil Gavaskar will look over as the League Commissioner. The triumvirate will share the same stage during the opening ceremony on Saturday ahead of the tournament opener on Sunday.
Ecstatic Vengsarkar
Dilip Vengsarkar, on his part, was excited after being appointed as Mentor for the league and hoped to encourage the budding cricketers in the city. “It’s an honour to be a part of the inaugural edition of Mumbai’s very own T20 league. As the Chief Mentor, I aim to encourage and nurture young cricketers for a successful performance on home turf. This is a great platform for Mumbai cricketers to shine and make a mark, early on, in their careers, leading to a promising future,” he was quoted as saying by Sportstar Live.
The likes of Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane are also expected to play their part in the T20 tournament. Though the latter is currently leading India in the ongoing Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka and will only play if his team will qualify for the final on March 21. Even Prithvi Shaw will be busy playing in the Irani Cup as he was one of the top picks during the auction.
