Indian opener Murali Vijay, who traveled to the UK for a surgery on his injured wrist from India’s long home season, returned to India on April 6. The Chennai batsman played most of the home season with a fractured wrist, which is what limited him to playing only a few types of shots.

Murali revealed that it was a difficult time for him but the team always came before any other thing. He pointed out that he had a particularly difficult time against fast-bowlers, to defend off the front foot since it was his bottom hand which was in pain.

Speaking to the New Indian Express, Murali revealed, “I don’t want to get too much into the status of the injury but I was playing with a fractured wrist,”

“It was a difficult situation to be in, but the team always comes first … I was not able to bat freely because, as the injury aggravated, I couldn’t play certain shots and when I went out to bat, I had to grind it out. Especially against pacers, it was difficult at times to even defend off the front foot because it was my bottom hand that was injured.”

Despite the injury and pain, he was rested for only a solitary game, the second one against Australia. He was India’s 3rd highest runner getter with 771 runs from the 12 of the 13 home games, falling behind Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli.

He registered two fifties in the Kanpur Test against New Zealand, which was the start to India’s long home season. Against the next visitors, England, his performance even bettered as he hit two centuries. Then came Bangladesh, against whom he again scored a ton. It was only in the Border-Gavaskar series that Vijay was not at his best, he could not go past 11 runs from the four innings that he played, except for the Ranchi Test in which he scored a fifty.

He also revealed that apart from the physical pain, the injury also hampered his mental strength. “As a batsman, when you can’t play certain shots, it affects your momentum and it was frustrating, but I saw it as a challenge because nothing comes easy and I learned a lot.”
