Mustafizur Rahman reveals the reason behind his nickname 'Fizz'

Mustafizur Rahman, left-arm pacer from Bangladesh has been highly impressive for the last one year or so ever since he made his debut against Pakistan in April 2015.

Speaking to ATN news after his return to Bangladesh, Mustafizur explained the reason for his nickname “Fizz”. The bowler said, “Hathurusinghe (Chandika) gave me the name. Mustafizur Rahman name is a bit big. That’s why coach gave me this name. One day, I did not see my name in a training session, but I saw Fizz. The coach said that it’s my name.”

Mustafizur had a great start to his international career by becoming the first player to win the ‘Man of the Match’ award on both Test as well as ODI debuts. He has taken the most wickets (13) in a debut One Day International series. He has been bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and he had a dream season in the IPL, winning the ‘Emerging player of the tournament’ award. He has played a key role in helping SRH clinch the trophy.

During the two-month long stint in India, he said that he missed his country and parents. “My mind was crying for my country before, now for my parents and friends,” he said.

There were some rumors saying that he had appointed an interpreter to help communicate with his team, but he rejected that. “Shikhar Dhawan, Ashish Nehra, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar could speak Bengali. No interpreter was taken for me. It’s newspaper’s fake news. I just taught Boult (Trent) and Tom Moody kemon acho? valo achi. (Bengali for ‘How are you?’ and ‘I am fine’)”

The 20-year old said that at this young age, he still had a lot to learn and improve. “I am still young. I want to learn more. There were many players from many countries in the IPL.I’ll try to give something better if I get a chance next time.”

He had not featured in the qualifier match against Gujarat Lions (GL) in the IPL due to a hamstring injury and when asked about the injury, he said, “I felt a little pain in my leg before the match. I’ll go and visit the physio and speak to the cricket board (Tuesday). Things will be known then.”

The Fizz has been a sensation in a batsman dominated IPL 2016. He picked up 17 wickets from 16 matches at an economy rate of 6.90 and was the go-to man for the SRH skipper David Warner.
