In June 2017, Afghanistan were crowned as a full member by the International Council’s (ICC). They also got the Test status and asked the No.1 ranked Test side India to be their first opponent in Test cricket. Earlier this month, Asghar Stanikzai and Co locked horns with Ajinkya Rahane’s men in their maiden Test at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

The newcomers stumbled in the match and lost by an innings and 262 runs. India are the number one ranked team in the longest format and overhauling them wasn’t expected from the debutants. However, the team was showered with praises for their glorious run in cricket. Meanwhile, Narendra Modi, the Honorable Prime Minister of India, sounded delighted by how things panned out.

“Rashid Khan was phenomenal”- Narendra Modi on Rashid Khan

“A few days ago, a historic Test match in Bangalore took place. You must have understood that I’m talking about the match between India and Afghanistan. It was the visitor’s maiden Test and it was a matter of pride for every Indian that his historic match was against India. Both teams performed extremely well in the contest,” Modi was quoted as saying in the 45th episode of Mann Ki Baat, his radio show.

Rashid Khan has been a delightful story from the war-stricken nation. He made his debut back in 2015 and hasn’t backtracked ever since. He is ranked number one in T20Is and has also been one of the most sought-after players in domestic T20 events. The tweaker even plied his trade for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL. Modi lauded him and termed him as an asset of the sport.

“One of Afghanistan’s bowlers, Rashid Khan was phenomenal in this year’s IPL and I remember that Ashraf Ghani, the President of the nation, dropped a tweet tagging me and wrote that the country is proud of their hero. He was also grateful to the Indian fans who provided their players a chance to showcase their skills. Rashid represents the best of Afghanistan and is an asset of the cricketing world,” he added.
