Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon suffered a mild concussion during an intra-squad match in Sydney on Tuesday (October 20). He was hit on the head while fielding for New South Wales on the opening day of the three-day encounter at the Hurstville Oval, before being checked by the medicos. Lyon registered figures of 1/79 in 20 overs and will not take further part in the game as a matter of precaution.
The off-spinner, however, is likely to be available for the team’s opening Sheffield Shield fixture against Victoria from October 27. Cricket Australia has released the schedule for the next set of Sheffield Shield and Marsh Cup encounters after New South Wales and Victoria borders opened on Wednesday. The matches will get underway from October 25.
New South Wales and Victoria will play at the Drummoyne Oval in Sydney on October 27 before meeting again from November 5 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, also the venue for their Marsh ODI Cup fixture on November 12.
Meanwhile, Victoria’s Will Pucovski, who suffered a concussion during a throwdown session in Victoria last week, is still managing his recovery and remains to be under medical supervision. An official word regarding his participation, meanwhile, remains awaited.
The 23-year-old was on return after a shoulder injury he endured during the off-season but a blow on the head at the Junction Oval has put the comeback plans in doubt for the moment. The young batter has a long list of concussion injuries. He had to miss out on the first couple of fixtures of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy last year after receiving a blow on his head by India’s net bowler Kartik Tyagi in the build-up to the series.
