Navjot Singh Siddhu in trouble after Tax Department seizes his bank account

Tax evasion has been a common phenomenon in the world. The people churns out various strategies in order to evade the same. Subsequently, the honchos of the tax department takes appropriate actions against the perpetrators. They are unable to provide the details surrounding the transactions and subsequently, face the wrath of punishment.

Several cricketers have encountered the trouble of taxation, the latest one is Navjot Singh Siddhu, the former Indian cricketer. As per reports in Indesport, the Income Tax Department has seized the ban accounts of the cricketer, who is also a minister of Captain Amrinder Singh’s cabinet in Punjab. The department has mentioned that Siddhu has pending tax dues of over 58 Lakhs owing to which the step has been taken.

The department has also remarked that they have given a notice of three days to the cricketer turned politician before taking the harsh steps. Siddhu failed to provide the documentary evidences of bills and invoices surrounding the purchases. Also, since the transactions couldn’t be legalized, 30 percent of his total expenses were disallowed in order to prevent the leakage of revenue.

The tax duration was said to be in the period from 2014 to 2015. Siddhu had professional expenses for  travel (38 lakh), clothing (28 lakh), employees’ salaries ( 47 lakh) and fuel (18 lakh). Meanwhile, Siddhu has claimed to be innocent and mentioned that he hasn’t defaulted and has been diligent in this matter. Meanwhile, an official from the IT department spoke to the media surrounding the issue of Siddhu.

“The assessee had gone in to appeal against the order on January 17 last year, but the Commissioner of Income-tax (Appeals) had passed the order favouring the revenue and not provided any relief to the assessee, as he had failed to provide any documentary evidence in support of his claim,” an IT department official claimed.
