Imran Khan and his political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) came out with flying colours in the general elections held in Pakistan recently. Though they couldn’t manage to win the majority of the seats, the former Pakistan captain is set to take oath as the Prime Minister of the country soon. He has invited the prominent former Indian cricketers for the swearing-in ceremony and Navjyot Singh Sidhu is one of them.
PTI spokesperson, on Wednesday, informed the media that they will send formal invitations to Sunil Gavaskar, Sidhu and Kapil Dev to attend the oath-taking ceremony of their fellow Pakistan counterpart. Even the Bollywood actor Aamir Khan is likely to get an invitation which will make the event an immensely high-profile event.
Did Sidhu accept the invitation?
Punjab Minister and the former Indian cricketer Navjyot Singh Sidhu was delighted after listening to the news and felt honoured. He accepted the invitation with open arms and is set to visit Pakistan soon. “It is a great honour and I accept the invitation,” he was quoted as saying by India Today.
He also praised Imran Khan for completing his dream after a 22-year struggle and called him a ‘man of character’. The 54-year-old also put his trust on the World Cup-winning captain of Pakistan to work for the betterment of the country during his tenure as the PM. “Men of genius are admired, men of power are feared but men of character are trusted. Khan Sahab [Imran Khan] is a man of character. He can be trusted,” he added.
There are no comments yet from Gavaskar and Kapil Dev and it will be interesting to see if they will accept the invitation. If they do attend the ceremony, it will indeed be a new start in improving the relations between the two countries.
