New Zealand v Bangladesh, ODI series – Statistical Highlights

Coming into the series after been whitewashed by Australia in Australia, New Zealand did the same in the 3-match ODI series against Bangladesh but were on the winning side this time around. Top order failures let them down despite a lower order fightback in first ODI after New Zealand set them a huge 342 target.

Bangladesh’s best chance in the series came in the 2nd ODI as they were 105/1 chasing 252 but collapsed and were bowled out for just 184. In the final ODI, they posted 236 despite a century opening stand. New Zealand chased down the target by 42nd over to complete the clean sweep. Here we look at all the stats and records recorded during the series.

2 – Number of centuries scored on 31st December in ODI cricket. Neil Broom and Kane Williamson missed out on joining the list as they ended up in 90s in the final ODI.

3 – Mortaza and Williamson picking 3 wickets each is only the 3rd instance of both captains taking 3 wickets in an ODI. The last instance was also an ODI between New Zealand and Bangladesh in 2010 at Christchurch. The other was Canada-Kenya ODI in 2006 at Toronto.

3 – Tamim-Imrul’s century stand in final ODI is only the 3rd century opening stand for Bangladesh outside home in ODIs. Other two were 137 vs Kenya at Hyderabad (India) in 1998 and 105 vs Zimbabwe at Harare in 2004.

3 – Shakib Al Hasan scored 59 runs and took 3 wickets in the first game. He became only the 3rd spinner to take 3 wickets and score a fifty in an ODI in New Zealand. Australia’s Greg Matthews in 1986 and Sanath Jayasuriya in 1997 are the other two.

4 – Broom and Williamson scoring 90s in the 3rd ODI is the 4th instance of two players scoring 90s in same innings in ODIs in 2016. Overall, this is the 17th such instance in ODI cricket and 3rd for New Zealand.

6 – Number of whitewashes recorded in New Zealand and Bangladesh ODI bilateral series. This is the 4th whitewash for New Zealand over Bangladesh in ODIs. Bangladesh has two over New Zealand. (Min: 3 match series)

7 – New Zealand now have won in their last 7 bilateral ODI series at home, their longest series winning streak in ODI at home. They won 6 ODI bilateral series in a row at home between 2001 and 2004.

7 – Number of 90s Kane Williamson has in ODIs, the 2nd most by any New Zealand player in this format. Nathan Astle has 9 scores of 90s in ODIs. His 7 scores of 90s are the most by any player in ODI since his debut.

7y 354d – Time Neil Broom took to score his maiden ODI century from his debut. He scored it in his 2nd ODI of this series, his 2nd ODI in last 6 years. John Wright holds the record for New Zealand as he took 9 years and 244 days for his maiden ODI ton from his debut.

10 – Number of 90 scores Kane Williamson has in international cricket, the joint most by any New Zealand player. Stephen Fleming also has 10 scores of 90s in international cricket. Since his debut, no player has more than 7 scores of 90s across all formats in international cricket.

3/22 – Kane Williamson’s bowling figures of 3/22 in the 2nd ODI were his best figures as captain. He became only the 3rd New Zealand captain to take 3-fer in ODIs. Daniel Vettori had done it on 10 occasions while Kyle Mills did it once in 2013 and was the last one to do before Williamson.

62 – Runs conceded by Mustafizur Rahman in the first ODI of the series, the most he has conceded in an ODI game in his career so far. This was also the first time he has conceded runs at more than 6 an over in an ODI.

96 – Innings taken by Kane Williamson to complete 4000 ODI runs, the joint fourth fastest by any player to the milestone and the fastest by a New Zealand player. He completed his milestone in the first ODI.

102 – Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes’ 102-run stand in the 3rd ODI is Bangladesh’s highest opening stand in 8 ODIs this year. The pair put on 80 vs England at Chittagong.

179 – Neil Broom and Kane Williamson’s 179-run stand in the 3rd ODI is the highest stand for New Zealand for the 2nd wicket in ODIs. Previous highest was 159 by Guptill-Williamson pair vs Pakistan earlier in January 2016.

179 – Broom and Williamson’s 179-run stand in the 3rd ODI is New Zealand’s highest stand for any wicket in ODIs against Bangladesh. Previous highest was 158 by Crowe-Wright in 1990 at Sharjah and the same 158 by Latham and Munro in first ODI for this series at Nelson.

341/7 – New Zealand’s total of 341/7 in first ODI is their highest ODI total against Bangladesh. Their previous highest against Bangladesh was 338/4 at Sharjah in 1990.
