England levelled the 5-match ODI series by chasing down a moderate total with 73 balls and six wickets to spare in the 2nd match at the Mount Maunganui. New Zealand’s top order went into a shell after losing wickets at regular intervals before Mitchell Santner’s unbeaten 52-ball 63 helped them to finish with 223 on the board. England lost their top three by the 16th over before Eoin Morgan and Ben Stokes’ fifties completed the chase.

All the stats and numbers that were recorded during England’s convincing win to square the series:

7.85 – Tim Southee’s economy rate in the seven overs he bowled conceding 55 runs. This is the 2nd worst economy rate for a New Zealand captain behind 8.25 by Ben Congdon (77 runs in seven 8-ball overs) against Australia in 1974. This match was Southee’s first ODI as a captain.

9 – New Zealand’s loss in this game is their first in their previous ten ODI matches. The Kiwis won each of their last nine ODIs with all of them played at home.

10England registered their 10th consecutive win while chasing in the ODI format. This is their joint-longest winning streak while chasing in ODIs alongside the ten successive wins during 2003 and 2004.

10 – Mark Chapman became the 10th player to represent two different countries in the ODI format. This game was Chapman’s maiden ODI for New Zealand. He featured in two ODIs for Hong Kong and scored an unbeaten 124 on his debut.

57.47 – Martin Guptill’s batting strike-rate of 57.47 during his 87-ball 50 in this game is the lowest among his 47 fifty-plus scores in ODI cricket. He never had an S/R below 60 in his previous 46 fifty-plus scores.

223/10 – New Zealand’s total of 223 in this game is their lowest in a home ODI in the last 15 years after batting till the 50th over. The Kiwis posted 199/9 in an ODI against India in 2003 batting full 50 overs.

224 – The run chase of 224 is the 2nd highest for any team against New Zealand achieved in 38 and fewer overs. England chased down the 224-run target in this game in 37.5 overs while Australia needed only 34.2 overs for chasing down 234 in the 2005 Wellington ODI.

2002 – The last time New Zealand won an ODI at home against England while defending the total was back in 2002. Since then, England defeated the home team all four times while chasing after winning the toss in all those games.
