New Zealand vs India, 2020: 2nd ODI – Statistical Preview

India lost the first match of an ODI series for the 3rd consecutive time as New Zealand recorded their highest ODI run-chase of 348 in the first ODI. This was also India’s first defeat on the ongoing tour of New Zealand as they completing a whitewash in the 5-match T20I series. India’s batting performance was a convincing one as the middle-order carried on after the debut opening pair gave a decent start. The 2nd ODI will now be played at the Eden Park where India won the first two matches of the T20I series.

All the key stats and numbers that matter ahead of the crucial 2nd ODI in Auckland:

4-4 – India’s win-loss record in the ODI format at the Auckland’s Eden Park. They won four matches and lost four out of the nine ODIs they played here. In eight ODIs against New Zealand at this venue, India managed to win only three with the last win coming way back in 2003. Their last ODI game against the hosts in Auckland during the 2014 tour ended in a Tie.


5-0 – The ongoing series against New Zealand is the 6th time since 2017 that India lost the first match of an ODI series; all during 3-match series. India won the following two games in the previous five series where they were 0-1 down and claimed the series. Last time they lost first two matches of an ODI series was against Australia during the 5-match ODI series at the start of 2016 which the lost 1-4.


10 – The 32 runs in the first ODI was only the 2nd score in excess of 20 for Martin Guptill across his last 10 ODI innings against India. In those ten ODI innings, Guptill aggregated 133 runs with no score higher than 32.


13 – Virat Kohli has 13 fifty-plus scores in ODI cricket against New Zealand; the joint-most fifty-plus scores for any player in NZ-IND ODI matches. Sachin Tendulkar also has 13 scores of 50+ runs against New Zealand in ODIs.

Ross Taylor’s unbeaten hundred in the last match was his 10th fifty-plus ODI score against India; the joint-most for New Zealand against India alongside Nathan Astle.


77.16 – Ravindra Jadeja’s bowling average of 77.16 in the ODI format against New Zealand is the worst for any bowler who bowled 500+ balls against them. In ten ODIs against New Zealand, Jadeja picked up only six wickets and has a strike rate of 84.

His ODI numbers in New Zealand are even worse as the left-arm spinner picked up only five wickets across 8 ODIs here at an average of 84.2 and a strike rate of 87.6. Jadeja has failed to pick up a wicket in his previous three ODIs against New Zealand in New Zealand where he conceded 151 across 29 overs bowled.


739 – Martin Guptill’s 739 runs at the Eden Park are the most runs for any player in ODI format at this venue. These are also the most runs he scored at any venue in ODIs. Guptill 739 runs in Auckland came across 15 innings at an average of 61.58 with two tons and five fifties.

Contrastingly, Eden Park is the only venue where Ross Taylor scored 250+ ODI runs at an average less than 55. Across 17 ODI innings in Auckland, Taylor amassed 416 runs at an average of a lowly 26 with a century and a fifty.


2017 – Last time Auckland’s Eden Park hosted an ODI game was back in 2017 where New Zealand lost to South Africa by 6-wickets. Prior to that defeat, the Kiwis won five consecutive ODIs at this venue.


4000 – Ross Taylor (3986) is 14 runs away from completing 4000 ODI runs at home. Martin Guptill (3942) needs 58 runs for the same milestone. Whoever achieves the milestone first will be the first to complete 4000 ODI runs on New Zealand soil.
