Thisara Perera went down fighting for Sri Lanka in the second ODI against New Zealand as the hosts clinched the 3-match ODI series with one game to spare. Colin Munro (87), Ross Taylor (90) and Jimmy Neesham (64) scored fifties to power New Zealand to 319/7. Sri Lanka were reduced to 128/7 before Thisara began to lay his hands on everything. The all-rounder struck 140 from only 74 balls with eight fours and 13 sixes before getting out as the last man while they were only 22 runs away from a victory.

All the major stats and numbers recorded during the thriller between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at the Bay Oval:

How to bounce back – An art by Thisara:

1 – No player in ODI history has scored as many as 140 runs and conceded as many as 69 runs in the same ODI a feat Thisara Perera made his own in this game.

Only three players have scored more than 140 runs having conceded over 50 runs while three have conceded more than 69 runs and scored a ton in the same ODI. However, no player before Perera scored 120+ runs and conceded 65+ runs in the same ODI.

2 – Thisara Perera is one of the two players to score over 50 runs in an ODI at 150+ S/R and concede over 50 runs at 9+ economy rate. Shane Watson was the other name with this unique double as the Australian achieved it during the 2015 CWC game against Sri Lanka.

69 – The 69 runs Perera conceded in this game are the 4th most by any player in an ODI where they scored a century. These are the most runs conceded by a Sri Lankan in an ODI where they also produced a ton.

Sanath Jayasuriya (102 with the bat; 66 with ball) in the 1998 Colombo ODI against Zimbabwe is the only other Sri Lankan to score a century in the ODI having conceded 60 and more runs.

Here is the List of records Thisara Perera created with his blistering 140-run knock against New Zealand

The tail that supported Perera:

170 – The 170 runs added for the last three wickets by Sri Lanka are the joint 3rd most in an ODI inning. Africa XI added a record 196 runs in the 2007 Bangalore ODI against Asia XI in an unsuccessful chase while India aggregated 188 runs for the last three wickets in the famous 1983 CWC game against Zimbabwe. Windies also added 170 runs for the final three wickets in the 1984 Manchester ODI against England.

Had Perera and Nuwan Pradeep added six more runs, Sri Lanka could have been the first team with fifty-run stands for 8th, 9th and 10th wickets in the same ODI innings. Till date, no ODI match had as many as three fifty-run stands for the 8th and lower wickets eve across both innings.

A first in ODI cricket:

1 – For the first time in ODI cricket, as many as three batsmen with a 50+ score were dismissed via run out in the same innings. There are 23 instances when two batsmen with 50+ score were run out in the same ODI innings prior to this game but never with three batsmen.

1997 Lahore ODI between South Africa and Windies and the 2005 Colombo ODI between Sri Lanka and India also had three batsmen getting out after making a 50+ score.

298 – Sri Lanka fell two runs short of their 3rd consecutive 300+ total. They had 300+ totals in five consecutive innings in 2006, four in a row in the CWC 2015 and three in a succession during the 2008 Asia Cup.

Had they scored two more runs, Sri Lanka would have become the first team to hit 300+ totals in three successive innings on four different instances. Australia has three such streaks to their name.

Yet another fifty for Taylor:

5 – Ross Taylor became the 5th player from New Zealand to score fifty-plus scores in five consecutive ODI innings. Among the five only Kane Williamson has recorded such a streak more than once. Taylor’s last five ODI innings read 90, 54, 86, 80 and 181*.
