India women’s team will be facing the New Zealand women’s side in the second ODI at the John Davies Oval ground in Queenstown. India would be hoping to get enough match practice as it would help them in getting accustomed to the conditions well ahead of the upcoming Women’s World Cup. Meanwhile, the Indian eves are yet to register a victory in the ongoing bilateral series. After losing the one-off T20I last week, the Indian team went on to lose the One Day series opener as well as they were handed a 62-run defeat by the Kiwis. Barring skipper Mithali Raj (59) and Yastika Bhatia (41), none of the batters could offer any resistance as the visitors were bowled out for 213 chasing 275.

Star batter Smriti Mandhana missed the first game due to extended quarantine, along with Renuka Singh and Meghana Singh. Meanwhile, Mandhana and Meghana reportedly are unlikely to be available for the second ODI but, pacer Renuka Singh could feature as she is out of her quarantine. As far as the hosts are concerned, they would not be worrying too much heading into Tuesday’s game as they have their bases covered. They were far better than India in all three departments in the first match. While opener Suzie Bates century propelled the Black Caps to a stiff total, medium-pacer Jess Kerr rattled the visitors’ batting line-up with a four-wicket haul.

Pitch Report

India’s bowling attack was tested when the New Zealand batters were going berserk in the first innings but, they were managed to stage a comeback as veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami, her pace bowling partner Pooja Vastrakar, and spinners Rajeshwari Gayakwad as well as Deepti Sharma chipped in with two wickets apiece. But, their Kiwi counterparts made vital breakthroughs and struck at regular intervals to take the match away from the visitors. Therefore, the team winning the toss would be looking to bat first and with no dew expected throughout the contest, a total in excess of 250 could be really difficult for the chasing team.

Probable Top Performers

Probable best batter of this match: Suzie Bates

Opener Suzie Bates roared back to form in the 1st ODI as she went on to score a match-winning century. Bates got an early reprieve when she was dropped on 13 by Rajeshwari Gayakwad at a point. It was indeed a costly miss as the elegant batter went on to score 106 as the hosts posted a stiff total of 275. The Indian team would be very cautious in the second game and make the most of their opportunities to send the senior batter back to the pavilion as early as they can. The Black Caps on the other hand would be hoping that Bates comes out all guns blazing and scores some precious runs to make a statement ahead of next month’s quadrennial event.

Probable best bowler of the Match: Jess Kerr

Medium-pacer Jess Kerr broke the backbone of the Indian batting line-up as she ensured that the visitors suffered a batting collapse with some accurate line and length. The 24-year-old made a tremendous impact with the ball in hand as she dismissed vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur before taking the big wicket of a well-set Mithali Raj to dent India’s hopes of staging a comeback in the contest. She then cleaned up the tail to finish with figures of 4/35 from her 9.2 overs at an economy of 3.6 including two maidens. Kerr would once again be expected to make the ball do the talking as New Zealand look to take a series lead.
