Newly-appointed Sri Lankan head coach Nic Pothas desired to obtain a few pointers from Indian captain Virat Kohli to deal with the perennial transition phase of the Lankans. The team’s performance on the international stage has been dismal post the retirement of their three stalwarts by the names of Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardena and Tillakaratne Dilshan.
However, Virat clarified that he can only oblige to the request of Pothas after the ongoing series against Sri Lanka. India previously had a seamless transition post the retirement of giants such as Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan and VVS Laxman.
Besides, seasoned cricketers such as Gautam Gambhir and Harbhajan Singh find it difficult to get a place in Indian setup. The transition of Indian cricket did not affect the results or their rankings alarmingly like the transformation phase of Sri Lankan cricket, which has continued for years now.
Pothas to receive pointers only after Sep 6
“We haven’t had any discussions yet. Those things may happen after the competitive zone is over and done with the series. I think that will happen after September 6 if it has to happen from their end,” the Indian skipper said.
“It didn’t matter if we were playing against a side that has played 60 Tests each – if we are mentally more prepared than them then we are in a better position to win. So we decided to put our heads in that zone where experience didn’t matter much for us” added the Indian captain.
That said, much of the credit for the great Indian transition has to be given to former Indian captain, MS Dhoni. Through his constant backing, India now has world class players such as Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin to replace the aforementioned heavyweights of Indian cricket.
