Northamptonshire batsman Alex Wakely retires from all formats of game

Northamptonshire batsman and former captain of England’s U-19 team Alex Wakely has announced his retirement from all formats of the game. Alex decided to hang his boots in the gentleman’s game after making a stunning 371 appearances in the County Championship for Northamptonshire and scoring more than 12,000 runs across formats. 

The middle-order batsman took to his official Twitter handle to share the news of his retirement from the game of cricket. He posted a long note on his social media handle speaking about his career and county. The 32-year-old also took the opportunity to thank all the people who helped him reach greater heights in his professional and personal life. 

Wakely’s last competitive game came for Northamptonshire against Kent in the County Championship last month. As Alex decided to bid adieu to the gentleman’s game, his team posted a small interaction with the middle-order batter on their official website, where he walked through his cricket journey. Wakely has been associated with the club since the age of 13, and he said that it is definitely a tough decision to part ways with the county team.  

“Northamptonshire Cricket Club has been my life since I was 13 years old and although this decision was extremely tough to make, I am excited about starting the next chapter in my life. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my career and I’m hugely grateful for my time in the game. I have had many highs and many lows along the way, but I have always given 100% to Northamptonshire Cricket,” Wakely said to the club’s official website.

A glimpse of Alex Wakely’s cricket career

Alex Wakely made his maiden appearance in first-class cricket in 2007. After his debut, the batsman guided Northamptonshire to the T20 Blast Championships in 2013 and 2016 seaosns. In his illustrious career, the 32-year-old represented the club for 14 years. Soon after making his domestic debut, Wakely was selected for representing England’s U-19 team. 

The right-hander featured in a whopping 147 First-class games and amassed 6880 runs at a decent average of 31.30. Alex also featured in 90 List-A matches and 133 T20 scoring 2532 and 2597 runs respectively for his team.
