England’s Joe Root has been an important member of a side that has little or no experience to boast of. Despite sitting pretty in second place on the points table, the Brits have had to grind out hard fought results, especially against Afghanistan. Despite skipper Eoin Morgan’s comments, Joe Root said that they haven’t performed to the best of their ability.

“We’ve obviously not performed at our best throughout the whole competition yet which, in a way, is quite exciting because we know that’s still to come,” Root said ahead of Saturday’s match against champions Sri Lanka at Feroz Shah Kotla

“Really pleasing to me is that we are finding ways of winning games which are really important in this format of the game.”

England will face Sri Lanka in their fourth and final match of the World T20 2016. Joe Root, however, has said that they are not thinking about the impact of the Sri Lankan spinners. Root added that his primary role would essentially be to play fewer dot balls rather than smash the ball to the stands.

“There is no right or wrong way of doing it. For me it’s about trying to play as few dot balls as possible and try and cash in on the boundaries when they are available,” said Root.

“We are struggling with our batting, especially the middle order,” the 26-year-old said.

“We don’t have experienced guys in the middle but we are working hard in practice and looking forward to doing well in the next two games.”

The Sri Lankans will take the field against England after six days of rest. Dinesh Chandimal, the Sri Lankan wicket-keeper also pointed out that the England batsmen are relatively weak against spin.

“We all know he is a world-class bowler and can do (a lot of) damage in the next two games…” Chandimal said. “They are struggling against the spinners.”
