NZ vs PAK, 2020: 2nd T20I – Williamson’s milestone win, Hafeez’s big knock, Southee’s record and more stats

New Zealand clinched the 3-match T20I series against Pakistan as they went 2-0 ahead following a 9-wicket victory in the 2nd game. Pakistan, electing to bat first, lost four wickets for 56 runs inside nine overs. But an unbeaten 99 from Mohammad Hafeez got Pakistan to finish with 163/9 as the veteran batsman struck 10 fours and five sixes. New Zealand got off to a quick start in the chase before Tim Seifert (84*) and Kane Williamson (57*) got the hosts through to the target in 19.2 overs with an unbeaten 129-run partnership.

Series win for New Zealand:

3 – New Zealand now have won three bilateral T20I series against Pakistan; all the three at home only. They got the better of Pakistan in the series played in 2010 and 2016 but lost in the 2018 home series.

Williamson’s milestone win:

50 – The 9-wicket win over Pakistan was Kane Williamson’s 50th win at home as New Zealand captain in International cricket. He is now the 2nd captain after Stephen Fleming (64 wins) to win 50+ International games on New Zealand soil.

10 – Williamson now has ten fifties in the T20I format as captain; the most fifty-plus scores for any skipper in Men’s T20I cricket surpassing Virat Kohli (9) and Eoin Morgan (9). Williamson’s 1300 runs in T20I format as captain are now the most by any player in Men’s T20Is as skipper.

A rare big knock by Pakistan batsman:

99* – Mohammad Hafeez’s unbeaten 99 is now the 2nd highest individual score in the T20I format for Pakistan. The highest is recorded by Ahmed Shehzad’s unbeaten 111 against Bangladesh in the 2014 WT20 match. Both scored 70 runs apiece through boundaries which are the most in a T20I innings for Pakistan.

Hafeez’s 99* is also the 3rd highest individual score against New Zealand behind Richard Levi’s 117* in the 2012 Hamilton T20I and Dawid Malan’s unbeaten 103 during the last year’s Napier T20I.

60.73 – Hafeez is now the first player to aggregate 60% of team’s total in a T20I match for Pakistan. His unbeaten 99 accounted for 60.73% of Pakistan’s total. In fact, Hafeez’s 60.73% contribution is the 2nd highest in a completed T20I innings in Men’s cricket by a player batting outside top three.

Shaheryar Butt’s 125* while batting at No.6 is equivalent to 63.45 % of Bulgaria’s 197/6 against the Czech Republic during the T20I played in August this year.

Hafeez falls one run short of a century:

99* – Mohammad Hafeez’s unbeaten 99 is now the highest individual T20I score by a player after turning 40. The previous highest was 91 by Heinrich Gericke for Malta against Bulgaria which was scored three months ago.

4 – Hafeez is now only the 4th player to end up on ‘99’ in a T20I. Alex Hales (99 vs WI in 2012), Luke Wright (99* vs Afghanistan in 2012) and Dawid Malan (99* vs SA in 2020) have scored exactly 99 before Hafeez and all the three while playing for England only.

A record-breaking performance from Southee:

51 – Tim Southee, with the 4-wicket haul on Sunday, completed 50 wickets in T20I format on New Zealand soil. He is now the first player to claim 50 wickets in Men’s T20I cricket in a country. In this process, Southee went past Rashid Khan’s 47 T20I wickets which he took on Indian soil.

2 – Southee has claimed two 4-wicket hauls in his T20I career; both of them coming against Pakistan. He took a 5-wicket haul way back in 2010 at the Auckland’s Eden Park against them.

Southee is now the first player with multiple 4-fers in Men’s T20Is against Pakistan and also the 2nd player after Nathan McCullum (2) with more than one 4-wicket haul for New Zealand in Men’s T20Is.

201 – Southee’s 3rd wicket of the game, Mohammad Rizwan was his 200th scalp in the Tweny20 format. He is now the 3rd player from New Zealand to bag 200+ wickets in T20 cricket after Jeetan Patel and Mitchell McClenaghan.

A big partnership in the chase:

129* – The unbeaten 129-run stand between Kane Williamson and Tim Seifert is now the highest 2nd wicket partnership for New Zealand in the T20I format. The previous highest was 114 between Hamish Rutherford and Brendon McCullum in 2013 The Oval T20I against England.
