Despite a much feebler T20I set up in their first outing against Pakistan, New Zealand managed to register a victory by 5 wickets. The win did not come as easily, but that it came without the likes of Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Kyle Jamieson, and Daryl Mitchell, all being unavailable, must give the home side plenty of confidence. Given that all these will be available for the 2nd T20I, makes the challenge for the touring party only tougher. Additionally, their regular skipper Kane Williamson – who has been unavailable since the second Test against West Indies due to his paternity leave – is set to join the team too.

There were positives aplenty for the home side in the first game, although none bigger and better than debutant Jacob Duffy, who finished with 4 for 33, the best figures by a New Zealander on debut, and the Player-of-the-Match award. New Zealand, clearly, outsmarted their opponents with that bat too, where Tim Seifert shone with a 43-ball 57-run knock, after decent contributions from Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman, who scored 23 and 34, respectively.

Pakistan, on the other hand, has not got going easy. After a start full of off-the-field hiccups, a victory would have been a nice way to compensate, although, come tomorrow’s clash, and they will be up against a much abler opponent with the series on the line. For them, the problems have been on the rise in the absence of their opener and skipper Babar Azam as well as Fakhar Zaman. Added to that the fact that the combined contribution of Abdullah Shafique, Mohammad Hafeez, and Haider Ali with the bat, in the previous game after they opted to bat first, was merely 3 runs, shows where Pakistan lost the game.

With New Zealand gaining the presence of most of their leading players ahead of the second encounter, a similar effort as the first game would be of no help for the visitors.

Pitch and conditions

The ground dimensions at Seddon Park are far better than those of Eden Park. With the average score at the venue being 177 and as many as 6 out of the 10 games falling to side defending, the choice at toss is a no-brainer. There are scattered showers expected, however, a full match is on the cards.

Pakistan is unlikely to make any change in their eleven. However, what they would want to change is how they approached the first game. In their regular openers’ absence, they went with a new pair in Mohammad Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique, although neither they nor the middle-order was able to live up to the expectations. Haris Rauf was the pick of the bowlers as he ended up taking three, while he was well-assisted by Shaheen Afridi, who bagged two. Imad Wasim and Faheem Ashraf were frugal, although Wahab Riaz and Shadab Khan went for plenty.
