Renowned Indian commentator Aakash Chopra, who is always vocal about his views has now given a verdict regarding the Indian Premier League (IPL). The former India opener has given a bold statement ahead of the mega auction in 2022 by stating that only two players should be retained by the franchises and only one Right to Match Card (RTM) should be allowed.

The 14th edition of the IPL had to be suspended due to the increasing number of COVID cases. The next edition of the IPL will see two new teams in action and Chopra wants to give the two new teams a fair chance to make their mark in the league.

Initially, when the mega auction was conducted three years ago, teams were allowed to retains their three players with two RTM being allowed to use. While speaking about his wishlist for IPL 2022 in a video shared on his YouTube channel, Chopra wants a slight tweak in the rule to spice things up a bit.

Aakash Chopra suggests few changes for Mega Auction

“When you go to the mega auction where you are getting the two new teams, only two retentions and one RTM should be allowed for the existing eight teams,” said Chopra.

“I know the settled teams will come back and say that they have put in a lot of work over the years to build their team and why they should be leaving their main players. Mumbai Indians will say that they want eight and Delhi will say that they want six. But then it will not be fair for the two new teams,” added Chopra.

The 42-year-old former cricketer also wants the two new teams to pick four players whom they think will prove beneficial in the longer run. Chopra also added that the teams like Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians, and Delhi Capitals might not like the rule, but he feels the competitiveness of the tournament should be there.

“The quality of cricket is the biggest reason behind the success of the Indian Premier League. I understand Indians in the IPL is the most important aspect but just for the first three or four years, you should try and have five overseas players in the playing XI,” concluded Chopra on the overseas rule.
