Pakistan admits the Blast outside Gaddafi Stadium was a Suicide Attack: The Blast that was reported outside the Gaddafi Stadium at Lahore in Pakistan last night, while the Pakistan and Zimbabwe teams played the 2^nd ODI of the series inside the ground, was a Suicide Attack and not a transformer malfunction.

Security personnel’s and the police that were deployed to secure the zone traced the attacker and tried their best to prevent the bomber from getting close to the stadium. It was their efforts that what could possibly have been a major strike was reduced to a minor blast. A brave sub-inspector lost his life, while six others were injured on the Ferozepur Road close to the Gaddafi Stadium.

After denying the facts for hours, the officials had to bring the truth out and Pakistan’s Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid, said that the blast that was a suicide attack and not due to overloading of a transformer.

Reports by the local media suggest that the blast happened at 9 p.m. on Friday night while the day-night match between Pakistan and Zimbabwe was underway at the Stadium with more than 20,000 people present to witness the game.

Pervaiz Rashid was quoted by GeoNews saying: “An attempt to attack the Gaddafi Stadium was foiled by the gallantry of a police official, who lost his life while trying to stop the attacker near Kalma Chowk,”

The incident happened like this- The attacker, who was riding a rickshaw was stopped by the Policemen outside the outer wall of the cricket stadium, sensing he could not go ahead, he blew himself up and the gas tank in the rickshaw blasted as well.

Amin Wains, Chief of the Lahore Police said: “The gas cylinder fixed in the auto rickshaw was exploded. Two persons including a policeman were killed in the blast. Forensic samples had been collected from the site to determine the nature of the explosion,”

It was a collective decision taken by the Ministry of Information government of Pakistan and the Pakistan Broadcasters Association to keep the incident as close as possible to avoid any adversity which could follow the blast, in form of a stampede or rumors of more such attack spreading in and around the stadium.
