Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan has offered the outgoing Pakistan Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq the role of match referee from Pakistan in the International Cricket Council (ICC). It’s a strange turn of events that Misbah has been offered the role of a match referee given the fact he will just retire from international cricket after the third Test against West Indies.
He is currently playing his farewell Test at the Windsor Park in Dominica against the Caribbean team and at the age of 43 Misbah will be proud of what he has achieved in his career. He has been a terrific player for Pakistan over the years and will definitely rank as one of the most inspiring captains in the history of Pakistan cricket.
It was Misbah who helped Pakistan come out of the spot-fixing debacle in 2010 and took them to the numero uno status in Test cricket last year after drawing a 4-match Test series in England by a 2-2 margin. Though they couldn’t keep their No.1 ranking for long but the achievement will definitely stand as one of the best in the history of Pakistan cricket.
He had a brilliant limited-overs career too scoring at an average of well over 40 but was unlucky to not score a century in his entire ODI career. It was under Misbah that Pakistan whitewashed England 3-0 in a Test series when they were the No.1 side in the world. Taking over the captaincy reign at the age of 36, Misbah helped to form a core team which saw many highs during his tenure as captain.
After his retirement what Pakistan will miss the most is his calm and composed presence in the middle. He doesn’t get too animated which helps in having a good environment in the dressing room as well. With two days left in his career, Pakistan cricket will surely miss his services and Misbah will continue to rule the hearts of millions of cricket fans.
