Pakistan recently thrashed Zimbabwe 5-0 in as many games in an ODI series and their batsmen had a great time smashing records as the series unfolded. But not all are happy even after the clinical performance by the Asian side and among them is Mohammad Hafeez.

The 37-year-old Hafeez was frustrated for being overlooked for the Zimbabwe series. The veteran all-rounder featured in the team management’s plan to play the fifth ODI but himself refused to play for he believed that both openers of the visiting team – Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq – deserved to be in the side after hitting two tons each according to reports in The Express Tribune.

In one of the games, the Zaman-Haq duo put up 304 runs for the opening wicket, setting up a new world record.

Agonising times for Hafeez

The reason for Hafeez’s disappointment was said to be a lost contract worth Pakistani Rupees 15 million that he had with the GT20 League in Canada. Hafeez left it for the Zimbabwe series.

The former limited-overs captain reportedly asked the team management to give him a clear answer about his place in the upcoming series and he was told that he was “still” very much a part of it.

A veteran of 50 Tests, 200 ODIs, and 83 T20Is, Hafeez felt that he deserved a better treatment and now is being forced to retire by creating an ambience where it will be tough for him to operate.

Hafeez has scored over 11,000 international runs and taken 239 wickets and wants to end on a high. He said that he wanted to have a talk with the selectors before he made his final decision but according to sources, Pakistan’s influential coach Mickey Arthur doesn’t count the aging cricketer in his scheme of things as he seeks a younger team in the run-up to the next year’s World Cup.
