The Final of the Champions Trophy 2017 between India and Pakistan was a marquee clash. One year passed by and the memories of the epic encounter are still pretty afresh in the memories of the cricket fanatics, especially the fans of the two countries. The Men in Blue already beat their arch-rivals earlier in the tournament and entered the Final as the firm favorites.

Pakistan, on the contrary, weren’t considered a formidable force prior to the event. However, they soared above expectations, brushed some of the best teams in England and South Africa aside en route their journey. Sarfraz Ahmed’s men brought forth their A game just when it mattered the most and took down Virat Kohli and Co by a colossal margin of 180 runs.

Pakistan rise above the odds against rampant India

India won the toss and elected to field first, understandably so, as they were touted to possess the most lethal batting attack among all teams in the league. The bowlers seemed to start well. Jasprit Bumrah found the outside edge of Fakhar Zaman’s willow, but to his agony, he wasn’t rewarded as he bowled a no-ball. Thereafter, the left-handed batsman made full use of the opportunity and raced away.

Zaman, who made his debut in that event itself, blazed away to his maiden ton and scored 114 runs from 106 balls. The knock helped the Men in Green pile on a daunting target of 339 for India to trace down. During the run-chase, Virat’s boys lost wickets in clumps and were pushed to the backfoot by some fiery bowling from the likes of Mohammad Amir, Hasan Ali and Junaid Khan.

Hardik Pandya tried to bring India back in the match with a swashbuckling knock of 76 runs from 46 balls. The all-rounder cleared the ropes at will and put the skids under the Pakistani attack. Following his shambolic run-out owing to a mix up with Ravindra Jadeja, India capsized and were bundled out for a rather humiliating 158 runs inside the 31st over.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) didn’t forget the day and posted about the match’s anniversary on Twitter. They wrote, “#OnThisDay a year ago… Pakistan won #CT17!”

Here is ICC’s post
